A century of Messiahs

Every performance of Handel’s Messiah is a special event, and Auckland Choral’s 2018 performance will be extra-special, as it is the choir's one hundredth consecutive year of Messiah performances. Since the choir’s founding in 1855 there have only been 2 exceptions – the outbreak of World War I and the flu epidemic of 1918. To celebrate this momentous century of Messiahs, the choir will be joined by visiting singers from choral groups near and far, and a stunning line-up of soloists will lead the choir, including New Zealand’s most famous tenor Simon O’Neill, Mezzo-soprano Deborah Humble, soprano Marlena Devoe, and bass Martin Snell whose “Trumpet Shall Sound” stays in the memory all year round. Join us again to welcome this year’s Christmas and to be part of our amazing “one hundrednot-out” tradition.

Who we are: Get to know some of our choir members

  • Jane Gee

Picture of Jane GeeI joined Auckland Choral in 2008. I enjoy the challenges of the big works which are inspired by Uwe's leadership. Singing with Auckland Choral is as important to me as breathing! And second only to my husband and family. My grandmother said that you should 'do The Messiah' at least once before you die! I have have had the privilege of singing it many times. I have made many friends and hope to sing with Choral for many years to come.

  • Becky O'Gram

Picture of Becky O'GramMy earliest memories of singing were car songs, where my sisters and I were squashed in the back of the car while my mother lead the chorus from the front. I started singing in small groups and choirs at age 12 for church events and friends' weddings. I've been a member of some form of choir ever since and now count myself very lucky to be a member of Auckland Choral. I joined in January 2017, with my first concert being the huge St John Passion by Bach. We performed it at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, in German! Singing out that first loud "Herr" gave me goose bumps and was an unforgettable experience. In December that year I got to perform in the Messiah for the first time and hope to do the same every Christmas for a long time to come.

  • Katherine Hong

Picture of Katherine HongHi, I am Katherine Hong - Alto 1, joined Auckland Choral in the early 2016.  I am crazy about 18th and 19th century classical music and dreamt one day I could sing "Messiah" in a symphonic choir.  And now not only I sing "Messiah" but also have lots of  opportunities to sing other beautiful and heavenly music which I never dreamt that dream.  No single rehearsal I want to miss.

I have one son and one furry kid.  I spend most of my time with my furry kid and enjoy watching ballet and will never get bored.
