A century of Messiahs

Every performance of Handel’s Messiah is a special event, and Auckland Choral’s 2018 performance will be extra-special, as it is the choir's one hundredth consecutive year of Messiah performances. Since the choir’s founding in 1855 there have only been 2 exceptions – the outbreak of World War I and the flu epidemic of 1918. To celebrate this momentous century of Messiahs, the choir will be joined by visiting singers from choral groups near and far, and a stunning line-up of soloists will lead the choir, including New Zealand’s most famous tenor Simon O’Neill, Mezzo-soprano Deborah Humble, soprano Marlena Devoe, and bass Martin Snell whose “Trumpet Shall Sound” stays in the memory all year round. Join us again to welcome this year’s Christmas and to be part of our amazing “one hundrednot-out” tradition.

Who we are: Get to know some of our choir members

  • Picture of Jacob Siohane-RoyleI joined late last year in the Soprano 1 section, and am currently Auckland Choral’s youngest member, at 14 years old.  Born and raised in Auckland, I have worked with professional music companies such as New Zealand Opera, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Opera Factory, and others.  Auckland Choral rehearsals are generally the highlight of my week.  In 2015 I gained first place in Opera Factory’s Idol competition. This year in the Aria international vocal competition, I came 1st in two of the four categories available.  Outside of music, I study in year 10 at Kristin School in Albany, and I play flute and piano.

  • Picture of John StevensonJohn has a passion for choral singing and has been a singing member of Auckland Choral for 30 years. He has been fully involved in the society throughout that time serving for 20 years on the Auckland Choral Management Committee, much of that time as Deputy Chairman of the Committee,, and for several years as Chairman of the Finance sub-committee.

John is a current Trustee of both Auckland Choral and Auckland Choral Foundation, the later as a founding supporter.

  • Picture of Nicola BurtonHi, I’m Nicola – Alto 2. I joined the choir 6 years ago and absolutely love it! For me, it is the perfect blend of people, community, fabulous music, the opportunity to perform, feeling uplifted every single rehearsal and a good dose of challenge (it’s tough getting all the pronunciations right, and actually learning the music!)
I have been involved with the Management Committee and the Marketing committee for the choir since I joined. It’s amazing just how much hard work and dedication goes into the running of the choir and ensuring our performances are of the highest musical standard – it’s a privilege to be part of it.
When not in choir I am a busy working mum with two teenage children and a great husband! We have a real love of the outdoors. I always have some sort of crazy goal involving a marathon or sea swim or adventure race and we love exploring NZ walking tracks – what a great country we live in. Ah yes – I love a decent Pinot Noir too!
